Ring Size Guide: How to Get It Right the First Time

VALTRYXX — The Journal

Nothing kills the excitement of a new ring like it not fitting. Too tight and it's uncomfortable; too loose and you're checking your finger every five minutes. This guide will help you nail the size before you order.

Know Your Size

If you already know your US ring size, you're done. If not, here are three reliable ways to find it:

1. Measure an existing ring. Take a ring that fits the finger you want to wear the new one on. Measure the inside diameter in millimeters, then match it to the chart below.

2. Use a strip of paper. Wrap a thin strip of paper around the base of your finger. Mark where it overlaps, then measure the length in millimeters. This gives you the circumference — match it to the chart.

3. Get sized at a jeweler. Most jewelry stores will size your finger for free in under a minute. This is the most accurate method, especially if you're between sizes.

US Ring Size Chart

US Size Inside Diameter (mm) Circumference (mm)
5 15.7 49.3
6 16.5 51.9
7 17.3 54.4
8 18.1 57.0
9 18.9 59.5
10 19.8 62.1
11 20.6 64.6
12 21.4 67.2
13 22.2 69.7

Women's rings typically range from size 5–8. Men's rings typically range from size 8–12.

Tips That Actually Matter

Measure at the right time. Fingers swell in heat and shrink in cold. Measure in the afternoon at room temperature for the most accurate reading.

Consider the band width. Wide bands (over 6mm) fit tighter than thin ones. If you're buying a wide band and you're between sizes, go up half a size.

The knuckle test. The ring needs to fit over your knuckle but sit snugly at the base. If your knuckles are significantly larger than the base of your finger, prioritize getting it over the knuckle — a slightly loose fit at the base is better than a ring you can't put on.

Dominant hand runs larger. Your dominant hand is typically half a size bigger. Make sure you're measuring the correct hand.

When in doubt, size up. A slightly loose ring can be worn comfortably. A too-tight ring can't be worn at all. Most jewelers can size a ring down more easily than up.

What If It's Wrong?

Don't panic. Most solid rings can be resized by a local jeweler for $20–$50. Rings with stones all the way around (eternity bands) or made from certain materials can't be resized — check before you buy.
